If you are reading this right now, you have more luxury than someone in Iran could ever hope for right now. If you are watching TV or a video on youtube, updating your status on Facebook, Tweeting, or even texting your friend, you are lucky. If you are safe in your home, and were able to sleep last night without the sounds of screaming from the rooftops, you need to know and understand what is happening to people just like you in Iran right now.

They are not the enemy. They are a people whose election has been stolen. For the first time in a long time, a voice for change struck the youth of Iran, just as it did for many people in the United States only seven months ago. Hossein Mousavi gained the support of millions of people in Iran as a Presidential candidate. He stands for progressiveness. He supports good relations with the West, and the rest of the world. He is supported with fervor as he challenges the oppressive regime of Mahmoud Ahmadinejad.

On Friday, millions of people waited for hours in line to vote in Iran's Presidential election. Later that night, as votes came in, Mousavi was alerted that he was winning by a two-thirds margin. Then there was a change. Suddenly, it was Ahmadinejad who had 68% of the vote - in areas which have been firmly against his political party, he overwhelmingly won. Within three hours, millions of votes were supposedly counted - the victor was Ahmadinejad. Immediately fraud was suspected - there was no way he could have won by this great a margin with such oppposition. Since then, reports have been coming in of burned ballots, or in some cases numbers being given without any being counted at all. None of this is confirmed, but what happened next seems to do the trick.

The people of Iran took the streets and rooftops. They shout "Death to the dictator" and "Allah o akbar." They join together to protest. Peacefully. The police attack some, but they stay strong. Riots happen, and the shouting continues all night. Text messaging was disabled, as was satellite, and websites which can spread information such as Twitter, Facebook, Youtube, and the BBC are blocked in the country. At five in the morning, Arabic speaking soldiers (the people of Iran speak Farsi) stormed a university in the capital city of Tehran. While sleeping in their dormitories, five students were killed. Others were wounded. These soldiers are thought to have been brought in by Ahmadinejad from Lebanon. Today, 192 of the university's faculty have resigned in protest.

Mousavi requested that the government allow a peaceful rally to occur this morning - the request was denied. Many thought that it would not happen. Nevertheless, first a few thousand people showed up in the streets of Tehran. At this point, it is estimated that 1 to 2 million people were there. Mousavi spoke on the top of a car. The police stood by. For a few hours, everything was peaceful. Right now, the same cannot be said. Reports of injuries, shootings, and killings are flooding the internet. Twitter has been an invaluable source - those in Iran who still know how to access it are updating regularly with picture evidence. People are being brutally beaten. Tonight will be another night without rest for so many in Iran no older than I am. Tonight there is a Green Revolution.

Flipping through the latest Travel+Leisure Magazine, I ran across an ad featuring Liam Neeson for Mandarin Oriental. It's a very nice pic! If you've not seen the ad, you can see it on the hotel's website. Here's a link for their celebrity "fans" page. Liam is at the bottom of the page.

A drabble for the [info]tpm100 challenge, Sanctuary.

The First Night

I hear my breathing, a dry rasping in the silence of night. I fight to keep it regular, to keep it quiet, breathing in sand and peace, breathing out old memories. Thoughts I must let go now, for they serve no purpose. There is no comfort from the heat, no food to fill a belly, no water to ease dehydration, in attachment. I cannot see the future when I dwell in the past. With every breath, I own my mistakes. The quiet that fills this hovel is my home; my mind, the sanctuary that houses me. I will be strong.

If there is at least one person in your life whom you consider a close friend, and whom you would not have met without the Internet, post this sentence in your journal.

Well, let's see. If I hadn't met [info]emmagrant01 and begged an invite, I wouldn't have a livejournal. If I didn't have a livejournal, I wouldn't have met [info]clara_swift. If I hadn't met [info]clara_swift then I wouldn't have met Tonde ([info]elocin_tonde)(whom she had met in RL) and I wouldn't be engaged right now. And I wouldn't know [info]arwen_jinn, the coolest evah or be planning a meeting with [info]fairyspell, whom I adore even if I don't get to speak to her very often! Oh, and I can't name everyone! [info]freakfest, [info]deskitty,[info]hazelhawthorne...blah blah blah. Y'all know, I love you, right?

Tonight, Tonde and I are driving to Charlotte so that he can take part of his CCNP exam tomorrow morning. Fingers crossed that he passes it! Especially since tomorrow is his birthday, and it would suck to fail on what should be a happy day. But let's face it, tax day and the titanic sinking...history isn't on his side! *grins* Yes, I am the voice of eternal optimism.

Have you ever been sitting at your desk and you feel someone standing behind you? Then you see the faintest hint of a shadow out of the corner of your eye, your heart starts to race and you turn quickly and find no one is actually there? And it happens like three or four times in a row? No?

Me neither.

What's Pounding In My Head: Freedom --- George Michael
Tolerance. I’ve been thinking about it a lot lately. Democrats urge conservative Republicans to be tolerant of other lifestyles and “new” ideas. Yet, are democrats anymore tolerant then those they accuse? We (yes, I class myself as democrat -- not that there was much doubt) rail against those “ultra-conservative bastards”. We boycott businesses that support them. We, in effect, *blame* them for the choices they make. Consider a smaller scale. We tout our LiveJournals as a place for us to speak our mind, and by leaving comments open, invite others to do the same. When they don’t agree with us, and speak *their* minds, it results in hurt feelings and, most often, a backlash of intolerance (i.e. unfriending, snarking, ranting, whining, etc.). Why? If one claims to be open-minded, they should be very tolerant – shouldn’t they? Of course, that leads to the question are there limits to tolerance? A “point-of-no-return”? Should we be tolerant of rapists? Murderers? I don’t know. But in our daily interactions, we rarely face such extremes. Or at least I don’t.

I used to write in the TPM fandom. I don’t write that much anymore. I felt I was constantly stepping on toes, constantly having to worry about whether my grammar was good enough, my ideas fresh enough, and maybe my stories might upset someone. Force knows, I have a talent for opening my mouth and being immediately misunderstood. So I stopped posting anything of consequence, stopped writing, stopped *trying*. I realize now, that I was as being as intolerant as those I was accusing. People have a right to do as they wish. And I have the same right. I always *said* I felt that way, but I realized that the attitude I presented maybe didn’t say that to others. I realize all that now and it’s okay. I know to read it and then let it flow. Agreement isn’t required, but participating is. Else you’re shutting out a side that is just as valid. I’ve learned a lot about myself in the last year. Some of it wasn’t very nice. But now, I think I see that tolerance isn’t a word you can say lightly. Tolerance is a life lesson. Tolerance is a hardship, I think. It’s much easier to label something and not look back. But to look beyond prejudice, beyond personal belief, and share with people who might not be so accepting of differences, that’s a daunting task. To put yourself out there and say, this is me. Good or bad. And you are you. Tell me about you. Tell me why I should be Baptist, Catholic, Buddhist, Libertarian, Democrat, or Republican. Allow me the opportunity to speak as well. If you can do that, if you can listen without judgment, if you can walk the walk after talking the talk…and I think we all try to talk it…then you’ve accomplished something worth achieving. I am trying; but not always achieving. I’m attempting to see all the sides as just that, sides. Not as right or wrong. Not as good or bad; as another facet of life. It’s very difficult, sometimes it even feels impossible. But it’s the journey that’s important, right?

Tonde is ready to take the CCNP exam. He wants to take it in two weeks. It's about an hour and a half drive and he doesn't want to get up that early and drive it before the exam. I'm cool with that. So, I've tried for the last two days to get a reservation at a hotel in Greensboro, NC. There is *nothing* available for the *one* night I need it. WHYWHYWHYWHYWHY. It's Greensboro. On a Thursday night. There's no concerts at the coliseum until the following night. Nothing listed on the events calendar. It's not exactly party central. And I can't get a hotel within 35 miles. I've tried at least 25 hotels and all have nothing available. I'm starting to get a complex. I took a shower this morning. I brushed my teeth. I spoke very sweetly. Why can't I get a room?!?!??!??!?!?!?!?!

*sigh* Back at work. Vacation ended waaaaaaaaay too soon! Sunday was cloudy, chilly and *very* windy but still had a nice time walking on the shores of Hatteras, and visiting Cape Hatteras lighthouse. Even watched a couple of surfers -- that was cool. Surfers aren't a common sight on the beaches around here. Or at least, they haven't been on my trips to the coast.

They are busting up the tile in the entry way to the library. I am now ready to commit murder. The jackhammer is driving me crazy. Not that I had far to go to get there.

Anyway, back to the grind.

We're at Nag's Head. Got in yesterday -- hotel is between the bay and the Atlantic. Big waves coming in -- it's cloudy and drizzly. Definitely not beach weather! But it's still beautiful, and we've pretty much got the beach to ourselves. Which I don't mind walking in the rain -- I rather like it.

Today, we're off to see lighthouses and Wright Brothers Monument.

[info]fairyspell, Did you get my frantic voicemail?? LoL. It was a last minute incoherence--let me know if you're around Monday!

What's Pounding In My Head: Chrome-plated heart -- Melissa Etheridge
Sunday morning I received a call from [info]fairyspell. For those that don't know her, she's about the most vivacious person you'd ever wanna meet, and a call from her is like a glass of champagne. A damned good slash writer, a GLBT activist, and a bloodhound of a sleuth. Anyway, she called and asked about setting up a gathering for all the NC LJer's that we know. I think it's a great idea! Tentative suggestions were to meet in May in a centrally located NC State Park and have a picnic -- and perhaps catch a movie later (Kingdom of Heaven was mentioned, as was a Star Wars Epi. 3 viewing -- depending on the timing of this thing). It would be a family event, you could bring your kids and SO's! They can run off and play together while we talk about slash. *winks*

If you have suggestions of locations or events, that would be fantastic! (I don't think there are more than 15 or so of us tarheels on our collective flists). I live in the mountains and Fairyspell is down towards Raleigh, and another is near Charlotte. So we are fairly well spaced out, but I hope we can swing it so no one has to make a killer drive. So, if you're from NC and you wanna get in on it, let me know! Leave a comment or email me -- elocin_oco at yahoo dot com. Sounds, like fun doesn't it?

Oh, and [info]freakfest? [info]fairyspell and I decided you are an honorary North Carolinian and have to be here. So pack your bags and come on down!
